Photographer Avedon dies at 81
NEW YORK - Richard Avedon, the revolutionary photographer who redefined fashion photography as an art form while achieving critical acclaim through his stark black-and-white portraits of the powerful and celebrated, died yesterday. He was 81.
I had a brief encounter with Richard Avedon on the street in NYC. I approached him and asked for an autograph. "Mr Avedon, my colleagues will never believe that I met you, could you please sign this piece of paper." He genially obliged. Years later I sent him one of my books which included one photo strikingly similar to a shot of his that he did for the Pirelli calendar. My book was published years ahead of this calendar and yet I'm sure it did not influence this master. Avedon acknowledged the likeness of the two images and sent me a letter musing about how both models shared such a subtle waist.

Which one is the mayor of Toronto?

The one on the left is more to the the right, and one on the right is more to the left.
On Monday, I attended the the gala opening of the Destination Toronto photo exhibit, where I ran into David Miller, Mayor of Toronto, who also came to see the show.
The pictures for Destination Toronto were taken last summer, by members of PhotoSensitive, to show that Toronto made it through the SARS crisis and is once again alive and thriving in all its diversity and glory.
PhotoSensitive, which I belong to, is a Canadian collective of professional photographers who's goals are to raise awareness and educated the public on social issues.
The Destination Toronto exhibit is now open to the public in the Allen Lambert Galleria, BCE Place, Toronto. and runs until Feb. 14, 2004.

Photographer Helmut Newton was killed yesterday in a car accident in Los Angeles. I met Helmut and his wife Alice a few years ago in Bratislava. He was truly a legend of photography and will be missed.

Helmut Newton Saw the Dark Side Of Fashion's Dream

The photographer Helmut Newton transformed fashion into a form of erotica. With his long-legged models shot from below and lit like goddesses carved out of stone, Newton's vision of women was both threatening and compelling. Through his lens, sexuality was transformed into power.
Newton, 83, died yesterday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. According to friends, the photographer had just driven away from the Chateau Marmont Hotel, where he lived for three months during the winter (his main residence, with his wife, June, was in Monte Carlo), when he suffered a heart attack and crashed. Although the photographer had health problems recently, only days before he had been swimming, dining with friends and attending a party in celebration of the designer Alexander McQueen. more >>
Too Many Naked Women
By JOEL STRATTE-McCLURE
Salon.com
Helmut Newton has had it with female flesh. The photographer who gained worldwide notoriety for his coldly stylish portraits of naked women says he will never shoot nudes again.
"I just had a bellyful and realized I had shot enough nudes to last a lifetime," Newton says, pointing to a gigantic female nude photograph in his Monaco apartment's guest bathroom. "In fact, although I have no idea of the number, I think I photographed too many naked women." more >>

Ice Wine Party
Last Friday I was invited to take part in a celebrity ice wine picking and tasting event hosted by Don Ziraldo (pictured above) of Innskillin Wines. It was a great trip by special train to Niagara Falls Region and a lot of fun despite the -20 C weather.See the pictures for proof.
Thanks for the great time King Don!

Today Ron's a musician and has written stuff for National Lampoon's Last Resort, Killing Machine, Baby I Am Bored and tons more.
